Why Your HVAC System Needs An Annual Service Check

Keeping your home-comfort system in top shape is just as important as getting regular maintenance on your car. After all, if your A/C or heating system breaks down when you need it most, it's inconvenient and costly, just like a car breakdown. Your HVAC system, like your car, is a complex bit of machinery -- but with a little care and regular tune-ups, both will be on the road for a long time to come.

Tune-ups, check-ups or preventive maintenance -- whatever term you choose -- will help keep your system operating efficiently and your monthly utility bills low. That's especially important here in mid-Ohio. Annual service checks will also serve as an early warning system of any impending problems, allowing them to be discovered early and addressed before they balloon into expensive, and sometimes even dangerous, issues. When your system is always in it's best shape, it will last years longer, delaying the significant expense of a new system. During an annual service visit, your HVAC contractor will take care of all of the following and more:

Total home comfort system

  • Thermostats will be checked to be sure they're calibrated and set properly.
  • Electrical connections will be checked and tightened.
  • Moving parts will be lubricated.
  • Condensate drains will be inspected for clogs.
  • Starting cycles and on/off controls will be checked for proper and safe operation.

Air conditioning system

  • Evaporator and condenser coils will be cleaned.
  • Refrigerant level will be checked and adjusted.
  • Blower components will be cleaned/adjusted for proper airflow and greater comfort.

Furnace

  • Gas/oil connections, pressure and burner combustion will be checked for dirt or cracks.

Filters

  • Filters will be replaced. Homeowners should change air filters once a month between maintenance visits.
